Three-time Oscar-winning cinematographer Vittorio Storaro won the first of his Academy Awards for Apocalypse Now (1979). This photograph takes you onto the set, on the crew's side of the camera.

In the shade of a wooden pavilion, the crew waits as a line of helicopters comes in low over the river, mountains rising behind them. A man in a white vest raises a still camera to his eye, extras in conical hats stand along the narrow wooden walkway, and the team in the foreground watches the approach. Between the dark posts, cloud and tropical light open up like a frame within the frame.

Why it matters. Apocalypse Now (1979) was directed by Francis Ford Coppola, with Vittorio Storaro as its cinematographer. Very few people have seen the film from his side of the camera.
