LA CIVILTÀ ROMANA · VITTORIO STORARO

Real sunlight.
One frame of film.
The Pantheon.

● The Pantheon · Piazza della Rotonda, Rome

Vittorio Storaro captured the sunlight filtering through the Pantheon’s oculus, then exposed the image of the goddess Diana onto the very same frame of the same negative. No Photoshop. Just light and film.

THE STORY

Millions come to the Pantheon to see this light. One cinematographer captured it on film.

THE PLACE

For nearly 1,900 years, the sun has fallen through one open circle in the Pantheon's dome, moving across the stone hour by hour.

THE MASTER

Three Academy Awards for cinematography: Apocalypse Now, 1979; Reds, 1981; The Last Emperor, 1987. Then he spent five years photographing the Roman world.

THE METHOD

Created with a film camera. A double exposure made directly on the same negative, in a single frame. No Photoshop. First the sunlight, then Diana.
