THE STORY
Every emperor has a colour. Hadrian's is the blue of moonlight, and it shows what a face hides.
Hadrian ruled from 117 to 138 and travelled the whole empire. Fortuna, goddess of luck, reminded Romans that a life can turn in one moment.
Three Academy Awards for cinematography: Apocalypse Now, 1979; Reds, 1981; The Last Emperor, 1987. Then he spent five years photographing the Roman world.
Created with a film camera. A double exposure made directly on the same negative, in a single frame. No Photoshop. A portrait, for Storaro, is a ray of light carving a face out of darkness.
