LA CIVILTÀ ROMANA · VITTORIO STORARO
The edge of Rome.
Hadrian's indigo.
The wall.
● Hadrian's Wall · northern England, Britain
Storaro gave Hadrian's conquests the colour indigo, the deep blue of evening. This image reads that idea in light, at the northern edge of the Empire.

THE STORY
Rome stopped here, and drew a line in stone. Storaro reads the light at the edge of an empire.
Hadrian's Wall was begun around the year 122 and crossed northern Britain from coast to coast. It marked the northern limit of the Roman Empire.
Three Academy Awards for cinematography: Apocalypse Now, 1979; Reds, 1981; The Last Emperor, 1987. Then he spent five years photographing the Roman world.
In his book La Civiltà Romana, Storaro gives each conquest a colour, and Hadrian's wall in Britain is indigo. This image comes from his eye for the light at the end of the day.
