THE STORY
Natural light is the sun. Artificial light is ours. At the Foro Italico, Storaro made them share one frame.
The Stadio dei Marmi at the Foro Italico in Rome was built in the 1930s and is ringed by marble athletes. In Storaro's book, the empire is lit by natural light, and the future is its harmony with artificial light.
Three Academy Awards for cinematography: Apocalypse Now, 1979; Reds, 1981; The Last Emperor, 1987. Then he spent five years photographing the Roman world.
Created with a film camera. A double exposure made directly on the same negative, in a single frame. No Photoshop. Past and present in a single image.
