LA CIVILTÀ ROMANA · VITTORIO STORARO
Two exposures.
One frame.
Marcus Aurelius.
● Head of Marcus Aurelius, Capitoline Museums · Il Vittoriano, Piazza Venezia, Rome
Storaro gave every emperor a colour. Marcus Aurelius is indigo, the deep blue at the edge of night, and here his portrait appears out of the dark.

THE STORY
Every portrait is born from darkness. Storaro carved the emperor who looked inside with a ray of light.
In Storaro's book, the portraits of the emperors appear slowly in pale blue moonlight, and each emperor has his own colour. Marcus Aurelius ruled from 161 to 180 and wrote the Meditations.
Three Academy Awards for cinematography: Apocalypse Now, 1979; Reds, 1981; The Last Emperor, 1987. Then he spent five years photographing the Roman world.
Created with a film camera. A double exposure made directly on the same negative, in a single frame. No Photoshop. The portrait and a second image meet in one frame.
